First Base in collaboration with Project Blank introduce the ultimate summer swim capsule. This edit of must have pieces thoughtfully designed with the active ocean lover in mind and created with deep consideration to the environmental impact of the garment industry.  Made from Recycled Post industrial waste such as end of life plastics, these pieces assist in closing the loop and minimising environmental impact.

Sooo... How did you guys meet?

It was love at first sight! There is so much alignment between Project Blank and First Base that after an initial meeting it was a really organic process for that to snowball into a collaborative project.

We know you love the surf. How much did you play it into this swim collab?

Surf is the link between First Base and Project Blank. It's a personal passion of mine which bleeds into First Base, so being able to work with Project Blank on a swim capsule it was always going to be strongly influenced by surf. The styles are a tight edit of essential cuts that are made to surf, swim and lay in.

Let's be real, you actually made these for yourself, hey? lol

Ha! Ok so if I’m being honest, the Everyday Bikini is for me. It’s near impossible to find a simple but cool style that actually stays on to surf in! And In summer I like to surf in a bikini so it seemed like prime opportunity to get myself a new bikini, and hopefully a few other people too.

How would you describe your style and its influence on the collection?

I’m a total purist so I like to keep things simple. I don't mess like to mess with the classics - I just try to make them better. My minimalist and slightly tom-boyish style is definitely evident here and most obvious particularly in the One Piece Swim Suit. A typically feminine style that I have kept simple but added a bit of spice with the cross back detail and slightly higher cut on the leg.

What were the most important elements in designing swim for PB?

Striking the right cord between function and fashion was key. Project Blank has an elevated and minimalistic aesthetic which was important to keep in mind when creating these styles. There is a lot of similarities in approach between First Base and Project Blank so it was a very natural process in making this collection.

Tell us about the sustainable materials you chose?

We use recycled fabrications wherever possible and here we were able to use a really high quality recycled nylon in all the swimwear. The fibre is the by-product of recycling end of life post consumer waste, things like discarded carpet, car seat covers, fishing nets and plastic bottles.

Could you give us a run down of each piece in the collab ?

One Piece Swimsuit - this fully lined one piece has adjustable straps which makes it work for most body shapes and doubles as a functional swim suit for the girls that like to get their laps or hit the surf and a great suit just to lay and beach in.

Everyday Bikini - simple and sporty this suit does it all.

Athletes Bikini - a more supportive top and high waisted bottom makes this set great for the active ocean enthusiast. Built to stay right where you want it to while offering support and ultimate comfort.

Paddlesuit - this suit delivers max sun protection with a UPF50+ rating. Ultra comfortable and super flattering, this suit is perfect for those longer beach days when you want to be able to enjoy the sun without overdoing it.

Tell us about your one-off YarisByYou car interior that you are creating. What was your motif?

" The design comes from the cross roads of urban and eco. We took our signature branding and blended that with a desert inspired palette of sand, saffron and terracotta with a shot of red to punctuate the trims. Our key motif is a tag line that we think speaks perfectly to this collaboration 'Use Less. Create More' ".

What is the sustainable story behind this creation? What are the materials?

As an independent brand we have been working towards sustainability since 2015, and throughout this journey we have modified and recreated the ways in which we design, produce and deliver our gear to lessen our environmental impact. We use three pillars as our guideline to design and create under: Recycle, Repurpose and Restyle.
We’ve applied this same ethos to the Yaris interior.

We have used recycled nylon for the core fabrication to reimagine the seats, floor mats and trims which we have printed with our signature branding. We have then worked back into the seat covers with repurposed pre loved garments to create a patch work style effect and bring the interior to life.
My favourite portion is the hand worked detail that adds another dimension and layer to coverings.

Tell us about the creation process, how does it compare to designing an eco-fashion collection?

This was a totally new project for us so it was a fun process to take our vision and apply it in a new way. Like always, whether it is fashion or an interior we are trying to find balance within the design and colour palette and I'm super stoked on how this turned out.

How would you describe what you are creating?

We’ve taken inspiration from heritage sports cars and blended that with our expression of sustainability and overall design ethos of laid back cool.
